Chinese New Year food

The actual day of Chinese New Year is over for more than a week now. Atlanta has communities of Vietnamese, South Korean and some Chinese, but these communities are not large and perhaps influential enough for there to be a spirit of festivity that fills the air in the ethnic community enclaves during the Chinese New Year period. The other city in the US where I have spent my time during Chinese New Year is San Francisco and I can see the difference.

Life goes on as usual for us during the entire period of Chinese New Year. I am still working, I am still attending classes and I am still running. If there is anything different in my weekly routines, it is perhaps the way I try to have a dish of yusheng (鱼生) on our weekend restaurant outings. Since it is served only during the 15-day Chinese New Year period, this is the only time of the year to eat it if you like it before waiting for another year to have the chance again.

Yusheng - ingredients neatly arranged in a plate

This is how the dish looks like with all its ingredients when first presented at the table. It is often eaten in a big group and the party would stand on their feet and together, toss and mix the ingredients together with their chopsticks while saying auspicious phrases and wishes for a good year ahead.

There are a handful of Malaysian restaurants in town where the dish is readily found. A couple of years back, I wrote a passage on Chinese New Year dishes for my French assignment and yusheng was one of the dishes that I talked about. Here is an excerpt of my text:

Yusheng - after

Once the dish is properly mixed, or once the party has reckoned that they have had enough fun tossing the ingredients about, the dish is ready to be savoured.

Back running again!

This week, I am back running again! What a week of running it was…

Even though I just completed the Disney World Marathon, my current running season has not ended yet. I have one more race to go, before I go on a running break. I am going to run the ING Georgia Half Marathon on 30 March.

Last year’s Georgia Half Marathon was the first race that I took part in since I moved to Atlanta and there, I ran a personal best. On top of my usual goal of running injury free, I am setting an additional modest goal this time, which is to improve on my time in the upcoming race.

Judging from the pace I run while training and my 10k times, it will take some hard work from me to achieve this goal. Nonetheless, I think it is within my reach.

With that said, I am incorporating speed work, higher intensity runs and more stretches in my training. This week, I had my first try at interval training. Interval training is supposed to improve one’s cardiovascular performance and what I did was to run as fast as I could for 800m, stopped and walked to recover and I repeated that for 3 times. That was quite a tough exercise!

Being the first training week after my short rest period, my mileage this week’s was rather low and it was spread over only 3 days. However, I have been feeling exhausted, possibly from the effects of the interval training I had early in the week. What I can be sure of now is that the next 8 weeks are going to get tougher as the training gets harder.
